SUPPLEMENTAL DRAFT IMPLEMENTED

NEW YORK - The Board of Governors today implemented a new "supplemental draft" for players in independent leagues, who are not otherwise subject to the amateur draft.

The draft will only include the eight worst teams during the previous season, this is an aim to help develop the worst clubs, said Board of Governors chair Bob Costas. "We're trying to develop our product and help all teams compete. This is another way to ensure the talent is spread throughout the league."

This draft will take place at the end of the Continental League season sometime in June, right around the all-star break period in the Modern Era.

"This will work great, to give teams a boost right before the break," said one NL scout.

Players in the Continental League are buzzing about the prospects of the two-round draft. "We're thrilled. This gives us all a chance," said Jordan Hanley, a first baseman with the Southern Illinois Snappers, a league club outside St. Louis.

"Our players deserve a chance to showcase their talent with the best and this will give them an opportunity to prove themselves among the best," said Ozzie Smith, league Commissioner about the decision.
