Saturday, May 25, 1878, vs. Providence Grays (10-7 tied for 1st in the Liberty League)

We are going to give Poppy the day off against Taylor, since Taylor made him look so silly last time. Wilson Schroeder, the catcher, is going to play first, though he has not played there in 2 years (and wasn't very good then). For those of you wondering if Shadow Kielbasa might make a good platoon partner for Popko, the answer is no. Poppy is a switch-hitter, but is much better against right-handers than left-handers. Kielbasa is a left-handed hitter. Besides, Kielbasa is not overwhelming the International Association right now, batting .233.

Will Taylor, Prov. (31 L 9-7 1.91 0.7/3.2 BB/K) vs. John Bendickson, Troy (26 R 10-6 2.53 0.8/3.0 BB/K)

Won - 5 to 1

Sweep! Of the 1st place team! Or, actually, of the team that USED to be first.....

Once again, Bendy had a shutout going into the 9th only to lose it. We have now won 9 of our last 10 games.

We had 14 hits, tying our season high for a 9-inning game. LF Spider Coleman had 3 hits, stole a base, got caught once, scored a run and knocked one in. RF Dave Taylor, me, 3B Bill Rush and SS Sam Cowan each had 2 hits. Rush had a triple.

Other Games:

Washington (2) at Brooklyn (9) - Pop Yurkovich (7-10) over Bones Lane (4-13). Yurkovich held Washington to 7 hits and struck out 6. 2B John Bohler had 2 hits, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. 3B Rube Ford had 3 hits with double, scored once and knocked one in.

Boston (6) at Cincinnati (2) - Charlie Moss (11-7) over Jim Postema (1-2). CF Charlie Warner had 2 hits with an RBI. C Kip Kraft had 2 hits with a 2-run homer. 2B Bill Thompson had a triple and now has a 20 game hit streak going. Cincinnati CF Washington Macho pulled a muscle and will miss the next month of games.
