August 1 (DH), 2,3 v Kansas City Athletics

August 1 (Game One)--Carl Yastrzemski and Reggie Smith each hit two run homeruns in support of Phil Niekro, who scattered seven hits and two runs over eight innings, helping Boston beat Kansas City 8-2. (57-48)

August 1 (Game Two)--Making a spot start for the Sox, Bucky Brandon was outstanding, pitching 7 1/3 innings, giving up just five hits and one run, but Blue Moon Odom was just plain dominant today. Odom allowed just one hit and struck out 11 over 7 1/3 innings as KC split the doubleheader, nipping the Sox, 1-0. (57-49)

August 2--Tony Conigliaro hit a two out, two run single in the bottom of the eighth inning, tying the ball game at two, and Jack Billingham won the game with his bat, hitting a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 9th, giving Boston the 3-2 win. (58-49)

August 3--Rico Carty hit a pair of solo homeruns, and Tony Conigliaro and George Scott each added two RBI as Boston took 3 of 4 from the Athletics, winning 8-5. Lee Stange won his 9th game of the year, allowing 2 runs over six solid innings of work. (59-49)

August 4, 5, 6 at Minnesota Twins

August 4--Dave Boswell pitched seven shutout innings, striking out eight and Bobby Allison drove in a run with a double as the Twins blanked Boston, 3-0. (59-50)

August 5--Ted Uehlander and Harmon Killebrew each hit homeruns, and Stan Williams struck out five over 7 2/3 innings, giving Minnesota the 5-4 win. Rico Petrocelli homered, his 17th, in the loss (59-51)

August 6--A 1-1 tie turned into a rout for the Red Sox, as they scored once in the eighth and 5 more times in the ninth, capped by a two run triple by George Scott and solo homerun for Carl Yastrzemski, helping Boston avoid the sweep, winning 7-1. Reggie Smith added 4 RBI in the win. Jim Lonborg was a beast today, going the distance, striking out 14. (60-51)

As we move through the dog days of August and try to make up ground on the Tigers and Twins, we will head to Kansas City for three against the Athletics, followed by three games on the West Coast against the California Angels.
