Season Wrap-up

This was quite simply the Phillies' year. They finished with the 2nd most wins in NL history behind the 1880 Cardinals who won 111 games. Their pitching staff finished with two 20 game winners, Bill Vinton (21-6, 2.70 ERA) and Charlie Ferguson (20-9, 2.84 ERA), and a 19-game winner, Ben Sanders (19-8, 3.30 ERA). The offense led the league with a .275 team average and .338 OBP, but they were surprisingly only 5th in home runs. While they performed well enough to win the pennant, the bullpen was once again a weak spot, finishing 4th in the league with a 3.77 ERA.

Dodgers ace Sadie McMahon set a franchise record with 23 wins, and his 2.69 ERA was 5th best in franchise history. As for the Cardinals, the team's crop of rookies helped the offense to an overall #2 ranking. Right fielder Jimmy Bannon led the team with 22 home runs and 110 RBI. The Cubs offense also featured some big seasons by rookies. Second baseman Bill Lange led the team with a .314 average, while first baseman Tom Parrott hit .292 and led the team with 27 HR and 101 RBI.

More milestones were reached this season. Giants third baseman Roger Connor (.250, 28 HR, 100 RBI) joined teammate Dan Brouthers as the only members of the 500 HR club. Meanwhile, Pirates closer Will Sawyer and Dodgers closer John Cattanach both reached the 300 save mark, joining former Cardinals reliever Bill McGunnigle as the only pitchers to reach that number.
