Real Rookies Roster

Real Rookies(available at baseball sim central)
These OOTP5 compatible CSV files contain rookie years only. One per player. These debut years consist of ML’s and MLE’s for every player who appeared in the major leagues between 1951 and 1966 as well as selected career minor leaguers and Negro league players. This totals a bit over 2500 players.

The debut year included is their real rookie year be it majors, minors, Negro, Japanese or any other league they appeared professionally in.

The Batting, Fielding, Pitching and FieldingOF files contain a single debut year row for each rookie. This includes MLE’s for their minor, Japanese, Negro or other league as well as their actual major league record all combined via a large number of queries, and comparisons using a database of their complete professional careers into a single line that allows OOTP5 the chance to develop these players into reasonable approximations of the players they actually became. I had a time leaving room for developement and yet having the players generally develop into a reasonable facsimilie of the player they turned out to be. All the cup of coffee players may be imported as rookies in this way and it becomes apparent why they got a chance and usually why they did not make it. In many cases the differences between those that became journeyman players and those that stayed in the minors is null.

To use you will need to append the batting97, fielding97, fieldingof97 and pitching97 CSV files to your lahman 50 CSV files. You also need to replace the debut year column in the lahman master with the debut year column in the specifically included rows for these players. You must also append the added rows for the career minor leaguers and the Negro leaguers if you choose to use them (their lahman id ends with 00). You can append and replace these rows and columns using a spreadsheet program.

Then as you import real rookies for say 1955 you get all players who were rookies in 1955 even if they did not make the majors until 1962.

Some examples: (note that these players are included because they played in 1951 or later)
Warren Spahn debuts in 1940 as a 19 year old for the Braves
Stan Musial debuts in 1938 as an 18 year old for the Cardinals
Satchel Paige debuts in 1927 as a 21 year old and a free agent
Roy Campanella debuts in 1937 as a 16 year old for the Dodgers

Each player is assigned to the team he is most associated with based on the highest number of total PA’s or BF’s he had with each organization he played for. If most of his time was spent with independent clubs or in disorganized baseball he is imported as a free agent. I could also create a roster set where they debut with the organization they first played in. The reason I did not is that Joe DiMaggio started with an independent team and he would be imported as a free agent not a Yankee. Reggie Smith would be a Minnestota Twin etc.

Batting and Pitching data is based on the players’ entire professional career.

Examples of what this does:
Fielding:
Mickey Mantle is rated as a CF, SS and 1B in his rookie year with most of the weight on his OF duties even though as a rookie he was a SS as he played most of his career as an outfielder.
Stan Musial is rated as an OF, 1B and P with most of the weight on his OF and 1B career even though as a rookie he was a P.

Which brings up this point:
Musial is imported by OOTP 5 as a pitcher just because if a player appeared regularly as a pitcher (ever) it starts him out as one. His batting and position fielding ratings are correct so you just need to switch his main position to something other than pitcher if you wish. Or leave him as a pitcher and see what develops!

OOTP 5 also imports lousy hitting pitchers with a talent level of 1 for doubles and triples and 2 for strikeouts even if they should all be zero’s based on a player really having 350 K’s per 550 AB’s and no doubles or triples. Some players were really this clueless at the plate.
