July 13,14,15 v Baltimore Orioles

July 13--Reggie Smith hit a solo homerun in the 3rd inning, accounting for the only run of the game as Jim Lonborg outdueled Jim Palmer, 1-0. Lonborg went eight shutout innings, winning his 5th straight start as Palmer allowed seven hits in a complete game loss. (48-37)

July 14--Every Oriole starter had at least one hit, and Baltimore nickel and dimed the Sox to the tune of 13 singles and 7 runs, as they sneak past the Sox, 7-6. (48-38)

July 15--The Orioles beat up on Sox pitching, led by Woodie Held, who homered and drove in four runs, and Boog Powell, who had 3 hits, 2 RBI and 2 runs scored as Baltimore took two of three from Boston, winning easily, 14-4. (48-39)

July 16,17 v Detroit Tigers


July 16--George Smith, Reggie Smith and Rico Carty each had two hits and two RBI, and Joe Niekro went seven innings, allowing 4 runs as Boston beat Detroit, 10-7. Norm Cash homered twice in the loss. (49-39)

July 17--Gates Brown hit a tie breaking, two run homerun in the top off the 10th inning off Dan Osinski, his first homerun of the year, leading Detroit to a split of the two game series, winning 5-4. Reggie Smith continued his hot hitting for the Sox, going 3-5 with a two run homerun. (49-40)
