Saturday, July 7, 1877, at St. Louis Brown Stockings (19-11 tied for 1st place in the Liberty League)

This game is for sole possession of 1st place. A sweep by either team in this series may prove decisive. So far, the 2 teams are 3-3 against each other, with St. Louis taking 2 of 3 at their place and Troy taking 2 of 3 at Putnam Grounds.

This is the first time the Haymakers have faced Socks Hawkins this year. We were 3-0 against him last season, but he pitched well in all 3 games.

John Bendickson, Troy (25 R 4-5 2.71) vs. Socks Hawkins, St.L. (26 R 5-3 1.84)

Won - 9 to 4

If not for the rookie 3B Rube Ford, Bendickson would have had a fantastic outing. As it was, I am very pleased to hold the Brown Stockings to 4 runs. Rube Ford, who went 3 for 4 with a triple in his Liberty League debut in his last game, went 3 for 5 in his second game with a home run and 3 RBIs. Foster was the 3rd player picked in last December's B League draft, right after Washington picked 34-year-old C Bernie Robinson, who as defending League MVP Al Cannon's backup for the Olympics has yet to appear in a game.

We made 3 errors, all of them by LF John Hagadorn. He had a horrible game. He did not catch anything at all.

I had 3 hits, scored a run and knocked in 2. C Eb Burke continued to amaze me with 3 hits, including a double. He scored twice and had an RBI and threw out the only player who tried to steal on him.

Other Games:
Pittsburgh (7) at Boston (8) - Charlie Morlock (12-11) over Bones Lane (11-17). Pittsburgh scored a run in the 9th, but with 2 outs and the tying run at second, C Jake Houghton popped out to 2B Jack Warren. Warren, making his first start for Boston after spending the first half of the year in Lynn, hit 2 triples, stole a base, scored a run and knocked in 2. He also made 2 errors. 1B George Zech had 3 hits and scored a run.

Philadelphia (13) at Washington (3) - Charlie Moss (14-15) over Rufus Lee (4-5). 3B Jim Ware had 2 hits, stole 2 bases, scored 3 runs and had 2 RBIs. RF Lou Landaal had 3 hits, stole 2 bases, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. CF John Froom had 3 hits, stole a base, scored twice and knocked in 2. Philadelphia stole 7 bases without getting caught against Gold Glove C Al Cannon.

Well, we shouldn't have highlighted Shadow Kielbasa. As soon as we mentioned his hitting streak it was over. Sam Doty of Buffalo held him hitless in 4 at bats, though Auburn still won the game, 4 to 2.
