It's becoming more of a common thing in baseball now. Players that were originally signed as position players either can't hit professional pitching or can't make the change from aluminum bat to wooden bat but have a heck of an arm so instead of letting them go the organization tries to turn them into a pitcher. Case in point: Victor Zambrano of the Devil Rays. Brooks Kieschnick who has been in baseball since the early 90s as an OF came back up this season with the Brewers as a reliever.
