Opening Day 1880

Philadelphia (5) at New Haven (6) - For the second year in a row, New Haven upset Philadelphia on Opening Day. Rookie SS John Nocella had 2 hits and scored twice. Newcomer 1B Willard DeVaux, the Viking of Valhalla and ex-Haymaker, also had 2 hits and knocked in 2 runs. In the top of the 9th, down 6 to 4, 1B Fred Palmer doubled with 1 out and 3B Joe Carter singled him home with his 3rd hit of the day. But RF Jumbo Reeher and LF Dave Bigelow both flew out to Heinie Roach in leftfield to end the game. Charlie Charles pitched the game for New Haven and Paul Skinner for Philadelphia. Philly out-hit the Nutmegs 13 to 9 and Skinner struck out 7, but the Centennials committed 9 errors to New Haven's 3.

Brooklyn (9) at Pittsburg (10) - Neither pitcher was particularly effective, but rookie Jay Anderson ended up with the win over Paul Pratt. Rookie 1B Adoniram Horlacher had 3 hits, including a double and a triple. He scored twice and knocked in a pair. 39-year-old Jim Wells, the ex-Haymaker, hit a home run for the Alleghenys. With 2 outs in the top of the 9th and the tying run at second and the go ahead run at first, SS Fred Clapp, who had 4 hits in the game, flew out to Albion Floyd in centerfield to end the game. Clapp had a double and scored twice. 2B Tom McDonald had a double and a triple for Brooklyn and scored a run.

Boston (3) at Louisville (4) - Louisville scored the winning run in the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs. 3B Dave Thompson, who was on third base after C Frank Shea's bad throw on his steal of second, scampered home when pitcher John Taylor threw a wild pitch. John Walker held Boston to 6 hits to earn the victory.

Chicago (13) at Cincinnati (5) - Madison Coy defeated Frank Carlucci. New manager and 1B Bill Goldberg had 4 hits for the Colts. He scored twice and had 2 RBIs. 3B Con Stone had 2 triples and scored twice. SS Jim Greeley had 2 hits and scored 3 times. LF Jack Harrell had 2 hits, including a triple. He scored twice and knocked in 3. 3B August Kessler was injured for Cincinnati and is expected to miss 3 weeks with a cracked rib he suffered on a tag attempt by 2B Bob Rene when Kessler doubled in the first inning.

I forgot to mention that Cincinnati was sold in the off-season by Dad Magee to Cy Atwater, 56. I thought about taking them over, but decided to take over whoever the new team was. But when it turned out to be Pittsburg, I could not. Maybe next year.
