Tom York was the leader of the L.A. Dodgers offense from the outset of the MLHR and for many years after. As recently as 1882, he was still hitting 3rd in their lineup. Granted, the Dodgers struggled for many years but that was primarily because York had very little support offensively.
York led the league three times in walks. In 1877 he also led the league in triples and finished 3rd in OPS. He was also a two-time Gold Glover.
