I use Photoahop Elements but that is only because my mom bought it to edit her actual photos. Using it is really easy, but I think it's pretty expensive and probably not worth it for OOTP.
I know GIMP is popular, but I have no idea if it runs well on a Mac. Basically you can't go wrong with any layers-based program, but others my have other opinions.
