Upon further reflection, I have a completely different Red Sox team to nominate.

1978 Red Sox

2010 Adrian Beltre - Butch Hobson's power masked a below average overall rate of production and the most horrifying defense at 3B possible. Beltre would have made that team unstoppable by himself, from the offense and defensive upgrade.

2000 Pedro Martinez - Duh

Special Exception - 2004 Terry Francona. Don Zimmer cost this team wins with stupid decisions with not resting players, and with the pitching staff. Francona would have actually used Bill Lee in the rotation, and Pedro-Eck-Tiant-Lee in any order would have dominated, especially with the upgraded defense behind them.

A 99-win team that lost a 1-game playoff is arguably the best non-playoff team in Red Sox history.
