Game 44: Virginia Beach 1, Norfolk 13
Arturo Ramirez (5-1) went 5.2 innings of 2-hit ball, allowing 1 run (solo HR) and striking out 8. Luis Gonzalez went 3.1 perfect innings for the save (1). The Cav's love hitting against Virginia Beach and today was no exception, as they pounded out 16 hits. Mike Ford and Jeff Lewis each had 3 hits to lead the offense, Lewis drove in 2, Ford 2. Javier Janchez had 2 doubles and 2 RBI's. Joe Chambers, Augusto Rodriquez and Roberto Perez also added 2 hits.

Game 45: Virginia Beach 3, Norfolk 10
Shawn Brock (6-2) went 5.2 innings, allowing 4 hits, 5 walks and 2 runs, while striking out 5 before leaving hurt. Jamie King went the final 1.1 to pick up the save (1). The Cav's had another 16 hit performance, with Kent Davis leading the way with 4 hits. Mike Ford had another 3 hit day and Jeff Lewis and Javier Janchez added 2 each. Mauro Candelaria and Roberto Perez each drove in 2.

Injury News: Shawn Brock left today's game early with an undisclosed injury. He will spend some time with Franky to see whats going on. Takayuki Iemochi was recalled and placed into the rotation.

Transactions: Ron Reilly is ready to come off the DL. He will be placed on the active roster, sending Luis Gonzalez (0-3 7.56) back down to AAA. Vaughan Griffith will get another start (tomorrow) then Reilly will replace him the rotation.

Trade Talks: This injury diagnosis may end up putting the kibosh on a deal that was going to send Ron Reilly to the Newark Millers. We are in discussions with the Millers sending them our #1 and Ron Reilly for their #1 and a catching prospect. Not sure if we can handle going down another SP right now.

Game 46: Virginia Beach 1, Norfolk 8
Vaughan Griffith (2-2) went 7.2 innings, allowing 5 hits and 1 run, while striking out 7. Will Rose retired the final 4 hitters. The Cavaliers collected another 12 hits with Joe Chambers leading the way with a 2-3 day, including a HR (3) and 4 RBI's. Cody Johnson, Ed Duke and Jeff Lewis each collected 2 hits.

Game 47: Norfolk 4, Baltimore 2
Miguel Contreras (ND) is going to start being called Mr ND as he took another one after yet again a solid start. Miguel went 6.1 innings, allowing 3 hits and 1 run before leaving the game. Elmer Hawkins (2-1) took home the win with 2/3's of a shut-out inning and Dalton Whitaker got the save (13) striking out the side in the 9th. The Cav's scored all 4 runs in the top of the 8th, thanks to an RBI single by Augusto Rodriquez and a 3-run HR by Javier Janchez (2). Cody Johnson and Javier each had 2 hits.

Injury News: Shawn Brock has officially been diagnosed with a bone spur in his elbow and will miss about 4 months. He is scheduled for surgury tomorrow. He missed 4 months last season as well with a partially torn labrum. His chronic elbow issues are becoming concerning. Brock was 6-2 4.30 on the season.

Game 48: Norfolk 7, Baltimore 3
Matt Hollis (8-1) didn't have his a-game, but had enough to get the win. Hollis went 6.2 innings, allowing 10 hits and 3 runs, but he did strike out 8. Dalton Whitaker threw the 9th for the save (14) striking out 2. Kent Davis lead the offense with 4 hits. Ed Duke and Mike Ford each had 2. Duke, Candelaria and Joe Chambers each drove in 2.

Transactions: King Brock is coming off the DL. He will move to the DH spot, meaning Roberto Perez will head back to 3B. Joe Chambers is hitting the ball too good to be sent down (.322-3-17), and will be the back at 3B, SS and 2B, getting a lot of PT. Emilo Gonzalez was sent down to AAA.

Trade Talks: The Newark Millers GM didn't think our deal was good and was wondering if we were open to more discussions, they really want Reilly. We are going to pull out of the deal since the injury to Shawn Brock. Reilly is here to stay, at least for now.

Game 49: Norfolk 1 , Baltimore 4
Arturo Ramirez (ND) had to leave the game after 2 pitches. Rick Kelly (2-1) ended up taking the loss going 2.2 innings, allowing 3 hits and 2 runs. Elmer Hawkins went 2.1 innings and gave up 2 runs as well. The Cav's offense had 10 hits, and left 8 runners on. Mauro Candelaria and Kent Davis each had 2 hits.

Injury News: Arturo Ramirez will miss 1 week with a strained forearm. He will be sent to the 11-day DL and Ivan Pineda will be called up to replace him on the roster. Vaughan Griffith will move back into the rotation to take the next start or two.

Game 50: Norfolk 4, Baltimore 0
Takayuki Iemochi (1-0) didn't disappoint in his first big-league start, going 8 shut-out innings, allowing just 5 hits, walking 3 and striking out 3. The offense was lead by Augusto Rodriquez who drove in 2. 7 different Cav's had 1 hit, 4 different Cav's scored runs.

Transactions: Byung-hyun Chong has been activated from the DL and sent down to AAA. He is in line to replace Byran O'Neil on the roster, but O'Neil is hitting the ball too well to lose his back-up slot. Chong who has struggled so far this season can use the extra swings.

Around the League:
  • Barney Butler of the Christiana Blue Hens will miss about 3 weeks with a strained back muscle. Butler the ace of the staff has been having an impressive year for the Blue Hens: 6-2 1.43 10 GS.
  • Dave Moore, the 39 year old shortstop of the Lewes Braves, is out 4 weeks with a herniated disc. Moore was having a rough start to the season and this doesn't help: .203-4-21
  • Victor Mateo of the Wilminton Iron Pigs will miss 2 weeks with shoulder tendinitis. As a starter this season Mateo is 3-2 6.15 in 8 games.
  • Steve Jackson one of the young guns of the Ellicott City Express, is set to miss the next month with shoulder teninitis. The 25 year old 3B was hitting .290-0-5, since coming back off the DL.
  • Mark O'Higgins of the Chesapeake Blue Crabs will miss 4-5 months with a strained hip muscle. O'Higgins was hitting .296-0-9 in 71 AB's so far this season.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Charles Culligan, Lewes Braves, 11-25, 4 HR's, 9 RBI's
MarVa: Tom Anderson, Ellicott City Express, 9-21 2 HR's, 8 RBI's

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (140.2)
2) Milton Brewers (118.2)
3) New Castle Colonials (116.0)
4) Ellicott City Express (110.4)
5) Georgetown Sixteens (109.4)

GM Notes: This was a solid week for the Cavaliers. Losing our #4 starter hurt, but having the depth to bring up someone to take his spot without missing a beat makes the injury a lot easier to take. I really like Shawn Brock, but elbow injuries in back-to-back seasons really makes me lose faith in him. Now I have to think about Brock or Reilly, this off-season one of them is going. There will be some other factors, Arturo Ramirez and his stamina, the development of Paul Brown and Vaughan Griffith. Next year I will have an abundance of starting pitching... Its nice to have King Brock back, but I am disappointed with the playing time for Joe Chambers. I can't get trade Roberto Perez at this time, so do I keep him up or send him to AAA to get some swings? He has proven he is ready for the bigs... The only thing this team is missing is power, we just have no one that can hit HR's. One thing about Francisco Gallegos is he is a true power hitter, but I am not sure he will be able to hit enough to stay on the big club, maybe I will be able o sign someone this off-season (not sure where I will put them however)... I am liking how we are playing, just need to get and stay healthy!
