Mel Clark, a fine hitting reserve outfielder for the Phillies between
1951 and 1955 passed away at age 87 on May 1. After service
with the US Navy during WWII, Clark was signed by the Phillies
in 1947 and reached the big leagues four years later. He hit .277
lifetime with peak years of .335 in 1952 and ,298 in 1953. Clark
was a good hitter who performed well at the plate and didn't seem
to gather rust despite infrequent playing time. He was a lifelong
West Virginian.
