We were able to get a couple more International Free Agents signed today.
16-year-old Venezuelan righty Pio ‘Heavy’ Mourisca agreed on a $1,760,000 bonus. Mourisca is 6’2”, has 3 good pitches, solid intangibles and the makings of a middle-of-the-rotation pitcher.
Pedro ‘Old Nick’ Lopez, a 17-year-old Nicaraguan righthander signed for $202,000. He has 4 pitches, a good makeup and work ethic. Expectations aren’t all that high, but this move could pay off in a big way down the road.

The biggest trade of the season was made today and we were right in the middle of it. I got a call from Kevin Towers, GM of the Arizona Diamondbacks. He had been showing an interest in Evan Longoria for a while now. He offered us Buster Posey in exchange for Evan Longoria, 22-year-old minor league closer Eddie Butler and 19-year-old center fielder Albert Almora.
Towers must have been reading my mind somehow, as this trade would settle two issues for me. On one side we have Longoria, who has struggled this season. He is hitting only .229 with 7 home runs in 131 AB’s and he has missed significant time due to injuries. Longoria is eligible for arbitration after the season and his estimate is around 10 million. We have Nolan Arenado ready to step in when needed. On the season Arenado is hitting .281/.309/.448 with 14 home runs, 25 doubles, 60 RBI and 56 runs scored in 413 AB’s for AAA Oklahoma City. He has shown that he is ready to take the next step and moving Longoria would open his path to the Majors.
Posey would present us with a huge upgrade over Jose Molina,who has been hitting just .223/.285/.317 as our primary catcher. Posey, a former Rookie of the Year and MVP, is hitting .286/.386/.460 with 10 home runs in 252 AB’s. Posey is a stellar backstop and at age 26, gives us a force behind the plate for year to come. That is if we are able to sign him to a longterm deal.

So this deal would settle 2 areas of ‘concern’ for me. But the price, including Almora in the deal, would be a bit too much. We went back and forth a bit, finally agreeing on a deal that would bring Buster Posey over, while sending a nice package in return to Arizona. What Arizona obtains in this deal:
