2014 Entry Draft
I took over the Flames at the end of the regular season. My predecessor extended the contracts of nearly all potential free agents this summer. I have $16 million for Free Agents and $41 million for extensions. Which means I should be able to sign and keep a few free agents.
We should also get a good draft pick, having finished second last in the league.
Looking at the roster, our defence core is pretty solid. So I will focus on forwards, particularly RW where we are particularly weak and also a goaltender. Kari Ramo is a solid enough goalie with future potential, but we should look at other options.
On draft day I made trade gestures to both the Islanders and Sabres trying to get a second top draft pick by dangling Mike Cammellari and top prospect Emile Poirer along with a 2nd round pick. Both wanted more than that and I decided not to pull the trigger.
Our top draft picks were:
Round 1. S. Bennet (LW)
Round 2. V. Husso (G)
Round 3. R. Fabbri (C)
News from around the league:
Mike Babcock hired as head coach for Penguins
Significant Trades:
June 6: Moulson (MIN) to Nashville for Filip Forsberg
June 17: Zidlicky (NJ) to Blackhawks for Klas Dahlbeck
June 21: Brunner (NJ) to Columbus for David Savard
June 22: 12 Draft day trades, nothing major, mostly moves to free up contract space.
