Contract Negotiations

I'm trying to negotiate with a 32 year old former Cy Young winner who then flamed out..played in some independent leagues and found his way back to the majors. He's having a really good year (after finishing last year strong) and he was demanding a lot of money. (11.5 a year over 6)

And I may or may not be in rebuild mode next season and wanted a much shorter (trade-able) contract and it's June and he called off negotiations and said we are too far apart.

Will he allow me to reopen talks later in the season? Does that depend on the player? Or is it programmed for him to be done? If he is indeed done I just will try to ship him elsewhere. I've never had this much trouble with a negotiation that it came to this mid season.
