Magic #: 5

Game 119:
Ocean City 9, Norfolk 8
The much anticipated debut of Vaughn Griffith didn't go so well. Vaughn threw 73 pitches over 4.2 innings, allowing 10 hits and 6 runs. The Cav's tried to fight back with a 5-run 9th, but fell just short. Derek Campbell lead the offense with a 3-4 day. Mike Ford, Jeff Lewis and Kent Davis all added 2 hits, and Ford and Jesus Rivera drove in 2.

Game 120:
Ocean City 5, Norfolk 4
Shawn Brock (12-5) went 5 innings, allowing 8 hits and 5 runs. He struggled with his control walking 4 and throwing 124 pitches. The offense fell short again. Three Cav's had 2 hits, Mike Ford, Jesus Rivera and Augusto Rodriquez. Ed Duke hit a HR (24) and Ford, Duke and Rivera all drove in 1.

Game 121:
Ocean City 2, Norfolk 7
Ron Reilly (12-5) got us back on track, going 8.1 strong innings, allowing just 3 hits and 1 run. Roberto Perez lead th way with a 2-4 day with 3 RBI's, including a HR (19). Derek Campbell added 2 hits and John Phillips hit is first big league bomb (1).

Game 122:
Ocean City 0, Norfolk 1
Jose Matos (19-2) was lights out for the 7.2 innings he pitched. He allowed 3 hits and struck out 8. Dalton Whitaker closed the door for the save (32). The offense wasn't great, but did enough to get the win. With 5 differnt players getting singles. BH Chong walked, stole second and was driven in by Augusto Rodriquez for the lone run.

Game 123:
Norfolk 8, Annapolis 6
Arturo Ramirez (ND) went 5.1 innings, allowing 4 hits and 3 runs. Will Rose (7-0) threw an inning, allowing 3 hits and 2 runs, and was lucky enough to get the win. Dalton Whitaker struck out the final 2 for the save (33). King Brock lead the way going 3-4 and driving in 4, including a bases clearing double in the 9th, and solo HR (18). Derek Campbell went 0-2, but drove in 2. Mike Ford added 2 RBI's and Augusto Rodriquez went 4-4. Kent Davis stole based #43 and Jeff Lewis stole #45.

Game 124:
Norfolk 4, Annapolis 2
With the first start jitters out of the way, Vaughn Griffith (1-1) bounced back to get his first big league win. Vaughn went 7 innings, allowing 7 hits and 2 runs, while striking out 7. Luis Gonzalez pitched the 9th for the save (1). King Brock and Jesus Rivera lead the way with 2 hits each. Brock, Derek Campbell and John Phillips drove in runs. Phillips played RF, after replacing Chong in the 3rd.

Injury News: BH Chong went down with an injury and will miss 1 week. To make room for an back-up outfielder, I sent Luis Gonzalez down to AAA, and recalled Bryan O'Neil. I also placed Jose Renteria on waivers, thinking it would free up a roster slot.

Injury Update: A frustrated Miguel Contreras told reporters today that he would be out an additional 6 days after suffering a relapse in his recovery from an oblique strain. "I thought my recovery was coming along great, but then this happened," the Norfolk Cavaliers starting pitcher revealed. "It's disappointing. I expected to be back with the team by now."

Game 125:
Norfolk 2, Annapolis 6
Shawn Brock (ND) left due to injury after 3 innings. Derek Carter (2-1) took the lose going 1.1 innings, allowing 6 hits and 5 runs. The offense had 8 hits with the first 3 hitters getting 2 each: Kent Davis, Roberto Perez and Jeff Lewis). Jeff drove in 2 to account for the only Cavaliers runs.

Injury News: Brock left the game after 53 pitches and we are waiting to hear the diagnosis. The one thing this team will have issues handling is injuries to the starting 5. We are down 1, hopefully we don't lose a second. Pins and needles...

Team News: Jose Renteria was claimed by the Dover Generals... Looking over the Genrals roster Renteria will be used as a back-up, since they have an MVP candidate behind the dish now in Andy Kohl. Do I make the move? I have 2 days to pull Renteria off waivers.

Around the League:
  • Garrott Grant of the Richmond Cardinals will miss 6-7 months with a broken elbow bone. He was hitting .233-15-61 at the time of the injury.
  • Jose Chavez the 2B for the Dover Genarls is out 2 more weeks with knee inflammation. He was hitting .319-16-68 when he got hurt. He will be tough to replace.
  • Marcario Alelaria was sent to the DL. The Dover Generals MR, will miss at least 4 months with a torn back muscle. He has pitched in 40 games this year, posting a 3-0 record with 1 save and a 2.09 ERA.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Jon Fiske, Dover Generals, 13-31 2 HR's, 9 RBI's and 8 Runs.
MarVa: Ron Alder, Ellicott city Express, 14-31, 4 HR's 10 RBI's

Power Rankings:
1) Norfolk Cavaliers (142.7)
2) Dover Generals (122.8)
3) New Castle Colonials (109.2)
4) Annapolis Admirals (106.1)
5) Baltimore Barons (98.5)

GM Notes: Derek Campbell continues to slump. He is now hitting .133-1-6 in 18 August Games. Do I bring Janchez back up? Can I live with that? will he get better? Maybe a platoon for a while, but do I have someone up for it?... Looks like O'Neil will be DFA'd again, so I can bring up another pitcher. I may have to go with Jamie King or Luis Gonzalez as our #5 starter. The set-back for Miguel doesn't help... looking at my minor leagues my best option for replacing Brock if he is out for a while is a MR, either Luis Gonzalez or Jamie King. I checked the waiver wire and the free-agent market and wow it is thin! Gonzalez and King are my next up. I could go with Will Rose, but that is a stretch and would hurt the pen... King has 57 minor league starts, Gonzalez none, but he has more stamina... Injuries are starting to mount up, and I am getting nervous... Cooper Mananghaya will be ready to throw this week in AAA, he may end up getting some starts for us as well. Him losing 6 stamina might of been our biggest blow this off-season.
