It is every single player that is coming off their entry contract!
1. During the season the GM is required to file a qualifying offer in order for the players status to change from unqualified RFA to qualified RFA in order not to lose the player to FA.
2. IRL these qualifying offers are always at league minimum! They are NOT meant to be taken seriously, not by the team nor by the player and his agent.
3. When filing such a qualifying offer at the league minimum the player invariably turns sour and refuses to even speak to you for the entire season.
This is NOT right!
4. During the off season you can start talking to the players that now have turned RFA. They ALL demand ridiculous amounts!
Examples:
28 year old 4th-liner, been playing fourth line his entire career in the NHL. Is coming off a 3 year contract for 1.7mil/year - He now demands 6 mil/y
21 year old that's just come off his rookie year with 20 points in 70 games - He now demands 7 mil/y
24 year old 7th D, played 28 games last season with 8 points and -10 - He wants 5 mil/y
25 year old Goalie that never have played a single NHL game in his career, played last year in the ECHL - He now demands a one way contract for 3 mil/y
5. When negotiating with the player he expects me to up my bid by 3-4 millions but he will not lower his demands with more than 10-20 thousand at a pop!
This is wrong on so many levels that it is taking the fun out of the game.
What's the point of trying to scout and find players when they never resign with you?
