Trade Breakdowns
Trade 1: Norfolk Ships Escamilla to Milford
It's all done except the paperwork. The Norfolk Cavaliers and the Milford Clippers have agreed to a trade that will send 29-year-old second baseman José Escamilla to Milford, while 20-year-old right fielder Sergio Gálvez and 20-year-old minor league shortstop Mario Reyes will be shipped to Norfolk. A top front office executive with the Cavaliers described the trade talks as "quick and easy." "We're glad to get this deal done. We think it's something that helps our ball club and it didn't take too long at all to sort this one out," he said. Thus far this year Escamilla is hitting .204 with 3 home runs, 19 RBIs and 16 runs scored.
Jose Escamilla is 29 years old and about to hit his arbitration years. He came over to us in the off-season before the 2016 season, this was his 3rd year in Norfolk. His first year he played in 132 games, but in 2017 only 109 and so far this year only 53. As his production dropped so did his playing time. He is a solid fielder at 2B, 3B and SS, but for us he just played utility. He is a 3.5* player with fairly solid ratings (Contact: 8/8, Gap: 12/12, HR: 11/11, Eye: 14/14, Avoid K: 8/8) and should put up some decent numbers. The fans in Norfolk will miss him, but we believe we got back two kids who can play...
Sergio Galvez will be 21 after the season ends, and is a 4* prospect (current rating: 2). He is an outfielder with his best position being LF. We have him working on playing RF, so we will have some options. So far this year in AAA he was tearing it up .342-13-66, the Clippers thought he was ready and in 3 games he was 0-4 in the show. He will be assigned to AAA, with the hopes he will be on our big league roster next season (bye bye Derek Campbell?). He is a gold glove caliber LF'r with speed. His ratings make him out to be an all-around type player. Contact: 9/11, Gap: 12/12, HR: 5/11, Eye: 6/10, Avoid K's: 10/14. Antonio Diaz says: "Profiles as a future big-league regular, but he's got the talent to even exceed that projection". He signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2015, was named the #79 prospect in the DBL prior to this season.
Mario Reyes is a switch hitter, who just turned 20 years old and projects to be a 4.5* prospect (1* now). He is an average fielder, with below average speed. He has a solid bat and could turn into a star in the future. He only knows how to play SS, and while in AA New Orleans we will have him working on 2B and 3B. His ratings are Contact: 8/10, Gap: 11/11, HR: 4/8, Eye: 9/15, Avoid K's: 5/8. While with Milford's AA team, he hit .289-11-63. Antonio Diaz says: "A lot to liker here. Seems a lock to have a big-league futuer, with some star potential." Reyes signed with Milford out of Venezuela in 2014. In 2015 he was named the #76 prospect, in 2016 he was rated the #2 propsect and prior this season he was given the #13 rating.
Trade 2: Cavaliers Trade to Blue Jays for Payne
The Baseball News Network is reporting that the Cavaliers and Blue Jays have consummated a trade. Seaford will receive a 9th round draft pick in a swap for 31-year-old minor league shortstop Joe Payne. A league analyst called the trade a "pretty even transaction." In his career Payne is batting .257 with a total of 23 home runs.
Trading Escamilla was contingent on finding another player to fill the utility role. So we reached out to the Seaford Blue Jays and brought Joe Payne back to Norfolk. We signed Payne in 2014 as a free-agent, then 2 years later traded him away. This will be his 2nd tenure with us and we expect him to be our "super-utility" man. At 31 his batting skills aren't what they used to be, but he still plays gold-glove (won at SS in 2013) caliber defense at 2B, 3B, SS, as well as LF and is pretty decent in CF. Last season for Annapolis he hit .259-4-28, and during his minor league tenure this season he was hitting .289-4-38. Payne was placed on the active roster and put in as the back up 2B, SS, 3B and CF and 3rd string 1B. He will get some playing time at a lot of different spots, exactly what we need from him. Contact: 8/8, Gap: 9/9, HR: 4/4, Eye: 7/8, Avoid K's: 13/13
