As best I can see the Rule 5 draft works the way it is supposed to work.
Edit: If a Rule 5 drafted player is released they return to their original team. If you waive said player and he is claimed the claiming team assumes the Rule 5 responsibilities. If he is not claimed he remains on your roster with the same Rule 5 responsibilities. If you release the player during the season you get charged the remaining value of his contract before he is returned to his original team. If he is claimed on waivers the claiming team assumes the contract.

actually there was one thing that i found that did not work. (in early days when i allowed myself Rule 5 claims).
I claimed someone on rule 5, and later traded him to the original team, where he sat on the roster all year. AI seemed unaware that he could actually send the player down, since it owned his right. I have tested twice more with same results.
