For Deadball I really focus on pitching and defense. A couple of dominant pitchers will absolutely carry you. And keep in mind that GOOD defensive players can sometimes be tough to find so if you get a couple of them they can have a huge impact on your season.
Getting good offensive players is always a bonus but I think pitching and defense will take you all the way to a title!
