I guess this means his fighting days are over but he is still hanging on in there... refusing to give up and retire... so I guess the fix would be have the table say "retiring" rather than "retired"

The fighter should still be active at this stage and should fight at end for the span of fights in the options. After he hits the pre-determined number it should move him to retired. May be as simple as just adding one more column.
BTW, I love the ability to manually size the screen now, makes a big difference in fitting more columns of stats in
