An appreciation of Wane Graham upon his 1000th coaching victory at Rice University

Rice University went into the bottom of the 11th inning yesterday trailing Texas State by one run before rallying for two runs to give College Baseball Hall Of Fame coach, Wayne Graham (2012 election & induction) his 1,000th coaching win at Rice. In 23 seasons at Rice Graham's Rice Owls teams are 1,000-401 for a .714 winning percentage (about 5 wins per every 7 games played).
After a rather pedestrian 11 year pro career (1957-1967) mostly in the Philadelphia Phillies organization as a thirdbaseman/outfielder that saw him reach the majors briefly twice in 1963 with the Phillies and 1964 with the NY Mets Graham returned to the University of Texas where he completed bachelors and masters degrees in Physical Education. He coached high school baseball throughout the 1970s, then moved on to coach at San Jacinto Junior College (in the Houston suburbs) in 1981. His teams compiled a record of 574-113 there for an extraordinary .836 winning percentage in 11 years through 1991, winning five Junior College World Series titles (the JUCO WS). No Graham-coached team on any level, including high school has finished at or below .500.
Now 77, Graham said recently he wants to keep coaching baseball and hasn't thought seriously about retiring.
Photos from throughout his career follow.
