I have a group of about 8-12 friends that are all interested in playing OOTP via the online leagues (together).

Any tips on making this an easy experience for us? We're likely going to want to keep it (partially) simple at first. Can we change settings mid-season, in between seasons, or never?

Is there a way to set up a fictional league, but have the teams be roughly balanced at the start (without going through a player-by-player draft)?
