Game 1 Conference Playoffs

Game 1 of the Conference Championships
Pregame Roster Update: Moments before we had to submit our final playoff roster, we got some bad news, Ron Reilly had suffered a set-back from his recovery of his stiff neck. Upon hearing this news I decided to remove Rielly from the playoff roster and add Javier Janchez. I thought about bringing up another pitcher, giving us 12, but in the end I opted with a fielder amd a bat. Hopefully this won't backfire on me, but it does mean that Parker will get the start in game 3 and Ho in game 4.

Jimmy Carr a lefty, gets the ball for the Annapolis Admirals. Carr was 15-7 5.09 on the season and 1-0 1.54 against the Cav's. He will be up against our ace Miguel Contreras, who was 23-5 1.61 on the season and 3-0 2.05 against Annapolis.

Line Up: Facing a lefty means that King Brock and Ed Duke will be on the bench with Julio Romero doing the catching and Jesus Rivera in at second. We were 17-7 this season against lefties, so I am feeling good.

Inning 1: Prob Winning NFK: 53.92%
Top: 2-ground outs and a strike out get the Cav's off right.
Bottom: Kent Davis singles to left center. Roberto Perez follows with a single down the left-field line. Mauro Candelaria grounds into the 3-6 FC moving Davis to third. Derek Campbell hits a rocket to short, forcing Candelaria out at 2nd, but beats the throw. Davis scores. Pablo Freitas flies out to deep left.
Annapolis 0, Norfolk 1

Inning 2:
Top: A ground out is followed by a Steve Williams double to left-center. Derek Campbell (RF) drops an easy fly ball, Williams goes to third, Jose Colon is safe at first. Contreras concentrates stikes out the next batter, then the inning ends with a ground out to short. 2 are left on.
Bottom: Julio Romero walks. Jose Rodriquez walks. Jesus Rivera squares to bunt, bunts too hard rigth back to the mound. Romero is forced at 3rd. Rodriquez is on second, Rivera to first. Augusto Rodriquez grounds out to third, Jose moves to third, Rivera to second. Kent Davis flies out to left, 2 men left on.
Annapolis 0, Norfolk 1

Inning 3:
Top: After a fly out to left, Roberto Chavez, the leadoff man, triples to left-center. Contreras strikes out David Glenn and then gets Matsuura to flie out to center.
Bottom: Roberto Perez grounds out to short, Mauro Candelaria flies out to right. Derek Campbell goes down looking.
Annapolis 0, Norfolk 1

Inning 4:
Top: Dave Hughes singles to lead things off. Steve Williams who double earlier pops out to short. Jose Colon hits a laser back at Contreras who catches it and tosses to first for the double play.
Bottom: Pablo Freitas strikes out swinging. Julio Romero grounds to short. Jose Rodriquez goes down swining.
Annapolis 0, Norfolk 1

Inning 5:
Top: A ground out to short, is followed by a ground out to short, and that is followed by a ground out to second.
Bottom: Jesus Rivera gives us some insurance with a 1-2 leadoff 380 foot blast. Augusto Rodriquez pops out to second. Kent Davis walks. Roberto Perez singles in front of the LF'er. To load the bases. Mauro Candelaria grounds into the 1-6-3 inning ending DP.
Annapolis 0, Norfolk 2

Inning 6:
Top: Chavez grounds out to first. Augusto Rodriquez makes an incredible play, but is unable to throw Dave Glenn out. Kiyonobu Matsuura singles to left, moving Glenn to second. Dave Hughes flies out to center. Steve Williams flies out to deep center.
Bottom: Derek Campbell flies out to right. Pablo Frietas grounds out to short. Julio Romero grounds out to the pitcher.
Annapolis 0, Norfolk 2

Inning 7:
Top: Colon pops out to short. Giles strikes out swinging. Clyde Berry doubles to left... Contreras is at 90 pitches, I start to warm up Will Rose and Ivan Pineda, a lefty and righty... Joe Payne grounds out to third.
Bottom: Jose Rodriquez pops out to second. Jesus Rivera flies out to deep left-center. Augusto Rodriquez grounds out to short.
Annapolis 0, Norfolk 2

Inning 8:
Top: Leadoff man Roberto Chavez hits a laser into to left for a single. Glenn flies out to deep right. Matsuura goes down swinging... with back to back lefties up for Annapolis, Will Rose is brought into the game... Dave Hughes grounds out 3-1.
Bottom: Kent Davis starts the 8th off with a single to left... Ed Yoder a righty comes in to replace Jimmy Carr... A diving play by the second baseman is wasted as Roberto Perez hustles down the line for the infield single. Mauro Candelaria doubles down the left field line, scoring Davis, Perez moves over to third. Derek Campbell strikes out. Pablo Freitas is intionally walked to load the bases... King Brock comes in to hit for Julio Romero... Brock singles up the middle scoring Perez. Jose Rodriquez flies out to deep center. Candelaria scores, Freitas moves over to third. Jesus Rivera grounds out 6-4. Ending the inning.
Annapolis 0, Norfolk 5

Inning 9:
Top: Ed Duke replaces King Brock in the lineup and will be the catcher... Williams flies out to left. Colon gounds out to short. Bill Giles strikes out to end the game...
Annapolis 0, Norfolk 5
Norfolk leads the series 1-0

W: Miguel Contereras (1-0)
L: Jimmy Carr (0-1)
S: Will Rose (1)
HR: Jesus Rivera (1)
Player of the Game: Miguel Contreras
Attendance: 43650

Game Notes: This was the second career playoff start for Miguel Contreras. He pitched an 8-inning ND against the Cavaliers in 2014... That was Jesus Rivera's first playoff HR in 30 AB's... Augusto Rodriquez went 0-3, as his post season struggles continue... Roberto Perez lead everyone with 3 hits... Derek Campbell continued to struggle in the outfield. He had 2 errors in 86 chances this season in RF.

Key Play: In the second, with runners on 1st and 3rd after the Derek Campbell error, Miguel struck out Giles for out number two, and again in the 3rd with a runner on third, Miguel struck out Glenn for out number 2. Both of these plays took a lot of pressure of the fielders and showed that Miguel was on his game.

GM Post Game Thoughts: You have to happy with a shutout victory in game 1 and with Matos on the hill for game 2, I am feeling good. Miguel has been lights out all season, and today wasn't any different. He knows how to get himself out of trouble and does it consistently... My only concerns are Augusto Rodriquezs' bat and Derek Campbells' glove. Rodriquez hit over .300 this season and it would be nice to see him hit the ball in the post season. Campbell needs to concentrate more in the field... Overall it was a good day and a good win. I look forward to game 2.

Delaware Conference: Wilmington @ Dover
Iron Pigs starter Alberto Valentine got roughed up giving up 5 runs on 5 hits and 6 walks in the first 3, before getting pulled. But Mendel Schutters couldn't keep the Iron Pigs at bay, as he got hit hard in the 6th giving up 3 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks, as the Iron Pigs scored 4 in the 6th. The Generals fought back, but just couldn't catch them.

Wilmington Leads 1-0

Game Notes: Dover lost their star catcher in the first when he was ejected for arguing a strike call... Ex-Cavalier Scott Smith gave up 3 runs on 4 hits in 1.1 innings of relief for the Iron Pigs... Don White drove in 4 for the Iron Pigs, but the biggest blow was delivered by Jorge Quintero in the 6th who doubled in 2 with 2 outs.
