1919 World Series
The World Series is a best of 9 affair this season.
Is the Fix in?!
With a chance to win the World Series in game 7, the Cubs sent ace Dutch Leonard to the mound. He had to leave the game in the 2nd inning with a sprained ankle. After he gave up 7 runs in 6 innings during game 4, there were rumblings that the fix was in, and Detroit went onto to win game 7.
Was there something actually wrong with his ankle, or was this a chance to get some lesser pitchers into the game, unprepared.
How could the fix be in though? Dutch Leonard dominated in game 1, 3 hitting the Tigers. Well, that could have been a message to someone, that the payoff wasn’t enough. Conspiracy theorists suggest that the message was well received, and Leonard then threw games 4 and 7.
With Chicago up 1, in the ninth inning of game 8, Dutch Leonard came in to the game to relieve Walter Johnson. The tying run was on 2nd with 2 out. Leonard allowed a fly ball to right, which George Anderson dropped, allowing the tying run to miraculously score. If Detroit goes on to win the game, and the series in 9, then it would seem pretty suspect that all was not on the up and up.
Instead, on that bad ankle, Leonard pitched the next 5 innings in scoreless relief. He then came up with 2 runners on and 2 out in the 14th. Leonard lined a 2-2 pitch to CF, scoring the go ahead run. Leonard came back out to the mound, and got the Tigers 1-2-3. Game over, World Series over. Cubs WIN!
Was there a plan for Dutch Leonard and the Cubs to throw the World Series? Did Dutch have a sudden change of heart? Was it all nonsense? We’ll probably never know. What we do know is Dutch Leonard is know a World Series hero!
