Universal player pool
Suggestion
One universe-wide talent pool, with user-defined rules for each league governing what portion of the pool it has access to.
Reason
The Americas, Japan, Cuba, etc. are effectively distinct talent pools based on mutual agreement or government fiat, so each league (or league system) in a universe spontaneously generating its own players does a reasonable job replicating the modern game.
But if you don't care to mimic the modern game? If you want rival major leagues in direct competition for talent? High-level independent minors capable of signing the top prospects before the majors? Outlaw leagues? The current design is woefully inadequate for those purposes, which isn't really in keeping with claims of support for historical play and slogans about "play[ing] it your way."
