St. Louis Cardinals News – December 2020

Cardinals Acquire Infielder Rios
Another item is checked off the list via this trade with the Brewers.

Rios plays second and short and bats left, making him an ideal substitute for Wong and Crawford. He is solid defensively and makes good contact with a low strikeout total. He has another full year before reaching arbitration eligibility. Tilson was a non-prospect.

St. Louis Fired Up Over Signing of SP Odorizzi
As speculation mounted into the morning, rumors over a final agreement between Jake Odorizzi and St. Louis became a reality, with the star opting for a $114 million deal over 6 years ($19M/year). The Cardinals will forfeit their first-round draft pick in 2021 as a result of the signing. In his career, Odorizzi has racked up 92 wins and 62 losses and posted an ERA of 3.48. Fan interest in St. Louis increased significantly on the news.

Winter Meetings
The quest to trade Jackie Bradley Jr. continues during the meetings. There is interest around the league, but free agent offers constrain budgets and prevent the completion of a deal. The teams with the most interest so far are the Yankees and Blue Jays, but things can change quickly as offers come and go by the hour.

Bradley Jr. Goes to Rays for Bullpen Help
Another item comes off the action item list via this trade with the Rays:
• Add bullpen depth (dedicated relievers as opposed to excess starters)

Solis was with the Rays last season while Chambers came up at the end of the year. Chambers is projected to begin the year at Memphis (AAA). Both pitchers are former first-round draft picks. The biggest benefit of this deal is unloading Bradley’s contract, but I really needed the two arms that I got in return. Now I need to replace Bradley, and I have another few days here at the meetings to get it done.

>>> Updated Action Items
• Sign a contract extension with Oscar Taveras (negotiations in progress)
• Acquire a starting center fielder with strong defensive skills

Cardinals Add Almora to Outfield
Albert Almora is a Gold Glove center fielder (2019) with exceptional speed. The knock on him has been his lack of production at the plate. He can bat ninth for us, so he is a perfect fit. He had been waived from the Cubs secondary roster late last season, so he was fairly easy to obtain for a utility infielder with no options and two minor prospects.

Almora is affordable at $2M per year. He is arbitration-eligible again next season with a $2.3M estimate. This move pushes Knox back to the bench as the fourth outfielder, which is exactly where I want him.

$$$ Keeps Superstar Taveras in St. Louis
St. Louis fans celebrated as word of a signing became reality. Oscar Taveras won't be pulling up stakes anytime soon, as he has signed a 6-year extension at $19.5 million per annum. The total value of the contract is $3M more than the recent Odorizzi deal, making him the Cardinals highest-paid player in terms of AAV.

MLB News – December 2020
• Pittsburgh signed 3B David Wright for 2021 at $15M with a vesting option (135G) of $18M for 2022.
• Texas re-signed C Alex Avila for 3 years at $18M/year. The third year is a team option with a $2M buyout.
• Seattle signed 2B Jonathan Schoop to a 4-year contract worth $49M.
• Texas signed SP Mike Leake for 2 years at $14M per year.
• The Yankees signed 2B Jurickson Profar to a 5-year deal worth $83M.
• San Francisco signed 2B Matt Cerda to a 3-year contract worth $41M.
• Major free agents remaining: SP Max Hicks, SP Taylor Guerrieri, and SS Corey Seager.

Schoop and Cerda are good comps for Kolten Wong, i.e. 3 to 4 years at $12-14M/year.
