I was originally going to say no because as an expansion team it is nice to have those high first round picks the first few years and a crap ML roster really helps this cause! When running an expansion team I generally try to stockpile young controllable assets early on. However, given that this is just one player he will not likely have a large impact on you won/loss record.
Assuming the contract is not a financial hindrance it is a gamble that is worth taking. If he pans out you will have a potential franchise cornerstone or a nice trade chip for when your team is ready to compete.
