If you had a player with 3 years left at $5mil/$5mil/$5mil(Team Opt) and you released him right now it would cost you $10 mil and the TO would not be picked up.
Edit: Though if there is a Buyout amount that amount would be charged to you.

AFAIK that is not true. Any option that exists becomes confirmed if you release a player. So a player making $8M with an option for $10M if released halfway through the season would be paid $4M+$10M upon release. I'll check when I have a chance.
