I usually advise first time players to start with a current MLB game with a favorite team, where they can focus on learning how the game operates and correlating game ratings to their knowledge of particular players. The historical and fictional games can be a bit more complicated in controlling the outputs and rules.
The game can most certainly do pretty much anything you want at this point. Get comfortable with how the game operates, then the forum can guide you how to specifically do things you want (like have Addie Joss play a full career, for example) if you can't figure it out.
