This is a bigger question than you realize, at least it seems to me. You say you are playing fictionally. Are you playing historical fiction (which is something I've done in the past; start with an historical setup but play with fictional players)? If so, then you may want to keep this checked and let the game modify league totals season by season.

If you are playing purely fictional, and especially if your game starts in 2013 or later, or if you are playing in perpetual fictional 1955, say, you may want to leave this option unchecked and preserve the current settings for league totals, be they 1.000 or whatever was loaded for 1955.
