(6th Defense)
After a feeling out opening round without much to report, 'The Tiger' connected with a short uppercut early in round two that buckled Brock's legs and Thompson opened up a can of whoops ass, firing uppercuts from both wings and left hands and short right hooks that left Calvin utterly defenseless and forced the referee's hand. Tony jumped up on the turnbuckle and pounded his chest. He also pulled no punches in the post-fight interview saying he was the best Heavyweight in the world and he was immediately relinquishing his IBO title to issue a challenge to either Mike Perez or David Haye to settle things in the ring!
Seth Mitchell 50-9 (42) vs Luis Ortiz 47-11-2 (27)
I was shocked to see that these two had never met. Better late than never and Ortiz made up for lost time with a strong opening round that saw him wobble Seth with a right uppercut. they traded heavily in the second but a right hand opened a nasty gash under the Cubans left eye and Mitchell hammered him with right hands over a dominant final minute.
The war waged on in the third when Seth staggered Luis with a right hand, Ortiz fired back and they went toe to toe until Mitchell dropped a right hand flush on Ortiz' chin and Luis promptly fired back with a wild right and left that tagged Seth flush and put him flat on his back for the count.
Magomed Abdusalamov 47-9-2 (34) vs Steve Cunningham 26-1 (5)
Cunningham used his superior speed and skills to navigate the bull rushing Russian in the early going, staggering Magomed in the third with a hard hook. Abdusalamov patiently closed the distance and he floored USS in the sixth with a punishing hook. They traded violently over the second half of the bout but Magomed's huge edge in power led him to the UD. 116-113 x2 & 115-113
Tyson Fury 38-9-6 (26) vs Chazz Witherspoon 38-6-2 (26)
Witherspoon looked destructive, hurting Tyson in the opening round with hooks that ballooned his right eye and then he dropped him with a right early in the second before unloading with both hands until the ref stepped in.
Martin Rogan 33-6-1 (19) vs Audley Harrison 23-3 (21)
Near the end of a feeling out opening round, Audley dumped Rogan on the seat of his pants with a straight left hand. Harrison was dominant in the second with hard jabs and left hands but a flurry from martin late in the stanza produced a nasty gash over the Brit's left eye.
His corner closed the cut, but after a slow third Rogan stunned Harrison with an overhand right early in the fourth and dropped him later in the round for a five count courtesy of an uppercut. Audley looked unsteady entering the fifth and martin exploded with a right hand that drove Harrison into the ropes, Rogan was digging in with both hands when harrison unleashed a vicious uppercut that put Rogan down for the count for a thrilling victory for the enigma that is the 'A Force'. Audley earned a shot at the vacant IBO title against Luis Ortiz in August.
Ray Austin 21-0 (16) vs Garret Simon 42-18-2 (24)
The shopworn Simon started well and he dropped Austin for a five count in round three, ray regrouped and returned the favor in round five with a brutal right hand. Austin used his jab over the second half of the fight and secured a tougher than expected UD. 98-92, 96-93 & 95-94
Faruq Saleem 18-0 (12) vs Eric Fields 37-12-3 (24)
This bout was abysmal, but the aging Fields was more active and he snatched away Saleem's '0' with a UD. 94-97 x2 & 95-96. While the bout wasn't good, Eric decided to go out on a high note and he announced his retirement in the ring.
