At the start of each year, randomly pick 0 to 10 games from the schedule that I will delete and move to the day after the season closes. The choice of 0-10 games is a rough approximation in a ~160 game schedule as to how many games are not completed per season.
As I close in on the last day of the season, I determine if these games need to be made up to determine 1st place or wildcards - and if not I delete them. If they do need to be made up, I leave them on the schedule and play them out.
In my case, this is a fairly important need so I go to the trouble to do this. In your case, it may not
