CATS END 40-YEAR DROUGHT
For the first time in its IPA history the Kilkenny Cats finally won the Ruthlandian North Division... the Cats took charge in June when LaGrange stumbled and fell quite a bit behind and couldn't regain the lost ground... Kilkenny won the division flag by five games over the Sports, by 10 games over the third-place Taranto Tars and whipped fourth place Valmara by 17... the Ranford Bulls, the winner for the past two years and Pro champ in 2040, plummeted down to sixth this season and finished 19 games behind.

1. Kilkenny: the Cats had solid starters and a super bullpen... poor on defense with a .969 FA... Ciaran Cullen (21-11/2.99), James Crockett (17-16/3.32), Fred Doyle (12-9/3.44) and Jon Kostro (17-8/4.04) sparked the starting rotation, while the bullpen was led by Joe Pierce (13-6/1.07/7 saves) and Andy Mayfield (2-1/1.26/13 saves)... team improved from 73-81 (3rd-11 GB) to 92-62 this year... the batting jumped from .239 to .260, too... 3B Jorge Collazo (.296/20/75/97), CF Kevin McLaglen (.267/18/98/87) and C Frank Jordan (.278/25/73/53) were the top run producers.

2. LaGrange: good all-around club... rose up from seventh (17 GB) to second (5 GB) with better pitching and hitting, plus excellent glove work (.978 FA)... last postseason was in 2037... never won Pro Cup... the Sports possessed four impressive starters in All-Star Hot Dog Huxtable (24-10/2.79), Johnny Stoneman (17-9/2.69), Arnie Ayers (18-14/2.77) and J. J. Sarac (12-9/3.52)... not much in the bullpen... top bats were All-Star LF Vasco Aguilar (.323/31/112/101), RF Charles Bacque (.335/16/92/84) and SS John Rodgers (.313/19/86/100).

3. Taranto: no playoffs since 2019... won Pro Cup once in 2015... moved up from fourth (15 GB) to third (10 GB) this season... Rex Perrilloux (17-14/3.58) led the starters... 3B Mark Delaney (.280/47/128/78) had his best season with 47 HRs and 128 RBIs at age 37... other contributors were LF Derrick Damon (.314/20/84/100) and RF Gary Tramonte (.286/26/85/67)... so-so bats and pitching, but good power with 186 homers (4th)... just average defensively with a .972 FA.

4. Valmara: dropped from second place (5 GB) to fourth place (17 GB)... finished under .500... less-than-average on the mound and at the plate... average defense with a .973 FA... last pennant was in 2031... only Pro Cup trophy was in 2026... top pitchers were starter Teddy Twardzik (18-13/3.24) and relievers Paul Holloway (5-5/1.67/15 saves) and Gordon White (2-2/1.03/11 saves)... 1B Cain Greene (.287/32/113/78) had a fine year... didn't get much help.

5. Far Mountain: sixth last year (16 GB), fifth (18 GB) this year... not a lot offensively, nor on the hill... poor fielding (.968 FA)... won pennants in 2037 and 2038... and three Pro Cups 2011-2013... quality starters in 37-year-old Dennis Sasek (17-12/3.47), Ryan Kolb (16-10/3.78) and Curt Steinhauer (15-15/3.51)... excellent closer in Amos Tandy (4-1/1.45/17 saves)... only bat threat was CF Bert Richter (.293/32/101/90).

6. Ranford: won division in 2041 and 2041... surprise Pro Cup winner in 2040... offense just wasn't there this year... fairly decent pitching... average defense (.971 FA)... top performers were starters Duffy Davidson (22-13/2.84) and Ralph Hawk (16-14/3.38)... star LF Dale Weston carried the offensive load with a .313 BA, 36 HRs, 97 RBIs and 88 runs.

7. Glasco: the A's are a perennial second-division club... last made the postseason way, way, way back in 2002... no Pro Cups ever... rotation led by All-Star Basil Newchurch (19-15/3.10) and Pat Meyers (17-21/3.35)... CF Travis Houston led the club in just about everything with 24 HRs, 86 RBIs and 97 runs... batted .275.

8. Ancona: fewest wins in the RU with a very poor 55-99 mark... only Bay St. Clair in the Tycobbian Union was worse with 54 wins... no playoffs since 2022... never won Pro Cup... lousy pitching, weak offense, but good defense with .976 FA... came in last for the second straight season... 18 GB in 2041... 37 GB this year... Clint Hays (20-12/3.33) was the beat pitcher by far... star 3B Tommy Richardson (.324/20/86/83) had another good season... Richardson is a career .326 hitter... LF Eldon Aldridge (.274/37/104/92) has his best year, his first season as a regular after six years on the squad.
