1983 - World Series Game 2

The Tigers tied up their series against the Reds today in Detroit with an 11-4 victory in Game 2. Down 3-1 going into the bottom of the 4th inning, Detroit exploded for 8 runs including a grand slam by Harold Baines (3). That big inning was enough to chase Cincinnati starter Doug Rau (L, 1-1) who gave up 9 runs (3 earned) on 8 hits in 3.2 innings. The Tigers added 2 more runs off of relievers Don Hood and Max Leon to end their scoring. Cincinnati scored their 4 runs off of Detroit starter Dave Rozema (W, 2-0) who lasted 6 innings giving up 7 hits before being relieved by Bob Stanley who pitched the final 3 innings for his first save this postseason. The Tigers managed 15 hits off of Cincinnati including 3 apiece from Kevin McReynolds, Larry Herndon, and Roy Staiger. Along with Baines’ slam, Jason Thompson added his 3rd homer this postseason while Dan Driessen added his 2nd for Cincinnati. The Series moves now to Cincinnati where Detroit will be without the DH.
