The Padres and General Manager Josh Byrnes were looking to cash in on Anthony Bass' five-start audition in San Diego in September. A five-start stretch that included three of them with zero earned runs allowed at Pittsburgh, at home against the Dodgers and then at San Francisco. His overall numbers in the big leagues from 2013 were 4-3 with a 2.08 ERA and 0.87 WHIP. Nationals GM Mike Rizzo has seen enough and was willing to part with outfield prospect Michael Taylor to add Bass to a rotation now void of Dan Haren and Ross Detwiler.

"We were hoping to fill one of the rotation spots via the trade market and after an exhaustive search, we are happy to land a pitcher like Anthony," said Rizzo.

The Nationals can now turn their focus on one of the big-name free agents to round out their rotation, but Rizzo isn't showing his hand.

"We haven't committed to filling that other spot in the rotation via free agency or trade. We'll continue to take a look at the free agent market and how it evolves and keep our eye on the landscape for possible trades."

Byrnes had this to say regarding the deal: "It's tough to trade a pitcher of Anthony's caliber, but we are excited to add to our outfield depth in our system with Michael."

Taylor, 22, played 2013 between Lo-A Potomac and Hi-A Hagerstown, hitting .260 with 13 homers, 64 RBI and 20 steals. He is an excellent defensive player in center field, another attractive trait to Byrnes with the wide expanse in that area of Petco Park. He was a South Atlantic League All-Star and MiLB Gold Glove recipient.
