Do you and DaveM have the Apple app store version by chance? This update can't be used for that version. As Markus said in his post, the app store update has been submitted to Apple, but it takes longer since they have to approve it first.
So if you purchased the app store version, you should uninstall the game and then re-download the latest from the app store. Uninstalling will not affect your saved games (unless you tell it to remove them) so it's safe to do this. Once you do this, it will no longer ask you for a serial number that you don't have. Of course, you'll have to wait a bit longer for the app store update. Sorry for the trouble!
