Holmes outpoints Qawi on lackluster perfomance!
An undertrained Larry Holmes 20-0-0 (17) made his first defense of the WBC crown defeating Dwight Qawi 21-1-0 (17) by majority decision.
Qawi started the fight with an aggressive style and won the first round. On rounds two and three Holmes did just enough to win both stanzas that had a slow pace. On the fourth round Holmes had the total control of the fight for the first time using his left jab like a piston to had Qawi at bay. Holmes mantained his momentum on round five in which he hurt Qawi with a left-right combination. The sixth round had back and forth action with Holmes connecting a bit more than Qawi.
On rounds seventh and eight Holmes started to look tired and Qawi took full advantage of it hurting Holmes on the seventh with a straight right and on the eighth with a smashing hook.
Holmes reacted winning a big ninth round using his right hooks and crosses to put Qawi on trouble. On the tenth round both fighters traded bombs with Qawi clearly having the upper- hand. On the last two rounds Holmes stayed at distance and scored with the jab to secure his victory. The scorecards were 115-113 and 116-112 for Holmes and 114-114.
On the co-feature fight Tony Tubbs 18-1-0 (1) gave easy account of Bernardo Mercado 13-6-2 (8) beating him by a wide unanimous decision. Tubbs won most of the rounds of the fight and dropped Mercado on the fourth round with a wild overhand right and again on the eighth one with a hard cross to the chin. Mercado had his only momet on the fight on the second round when he found the mark with some of his trademark bombs. The scorecards were 99-90 (x2) and 98-91.
