I think I've found a loophole in trading.
Subban, rated 9.0, was an unsigned RFA for Montreal. I was able to snag him for a 1st round pick two years from now. He then signed with me for a cheap $4.6 million/year for 4 years.
O'Reilly, rated 8.0, was an unsigned RFA for Colorado. I was able to snag him for a 1st round pick three years from now. He then signed with me for a very cheap $2 million/year for 3 years.
With those types of deals, there is no reason they shouldn't have been re-signed by their existing clubs. That being said, while they were unsigned, there is no way these studs would be traded straight-up for a 1st round pick, especially for one that isn't even for the upcoming draft.
