Season Preview
We made it through spring with only 2 injuries. Elmer Hawkins our lefty out of the pen went down for two weeks and will miss the first week of the regular season, and Tomas Reyes are starting second basemen went down for 2 weeks, and will miss the first week and a half of spring.
We are going to carry 14 position players and 11 pitchers to start the season off. I had a hard time determining who was going to get cut for the last roster spot and it looks like Pat Hall will head down to AAA to start the season. Yaasutoki Ine (.386-1-10), we had an incredible spring will be the nod at the starting 2B, splitting time with Jesus Rivera (.347-1-2), until Reyes returns. When Reyes returns we will have to decide who will get sent down, Ine and Cody Johnson will be candidates for demotion.
Pitching wise we are looking pretty good. Don Sweetapple had a nice spring, ERA was a little higher than I'd like, but his strikeout totals looked good and he kept the ball in the park, something he didn't do last season. Karl Armstrong (3-1 10.29) got hit all over the place in spring, but will be our #4. I do have concerns, so we will see what will happen. Dalton Whitaker took over the closer role and Essie Bookelman struggled to close out games early. This may be one of those bullpen by committee when it comes down to it.
I am very pleased with the way our offense played this spring and the pitching was as solid as they have been in the past.
This should be a fun season, and will be compete with the Senators again, but this year I think we will take them down... My biggest concern going into this season is what about next. Sweetapple has a player option, which he will most likely opt out of, and we have no money to offer him an extension. My goal is to keep him here, so we will see...
We start the season with a 4-game series at home versus Ellicott city. We should be able to handle them pretty well. Getting the ball on opening day will be Don Sweetapple, he will be making his 4th straight opening day start for the Norfolk Cavaliers.
The opening day lineup will look something like this:
Kent Davis (L) CF
Roberto Perez (S) DH
Mauro Candelaria (R) SS
Pablo Fretias (R) LF
Jose Rodriquez (L) RF
Ron Alder (L) 1B
Jose Escamilla (S) 3B
Yasutoki Ine (R) 2B
Jacob Chaney (L) C
This is how the lineup will look to start the season. I have a feeling we will be doing some tweaking to it. Alder may end up leading off, Davis in the #2 hole. We have a lot of things that may work out. We will see how this works out.
Kent Davis and Jose Escamilla will be making their Norfolk Cavaliers debut, Roberto Perez will be making his Cavalier opening day debut and Yasutoki Ine will be making his Major League debut. He was up for 2 weeks last season, but didn't get any playing time.
Should be a fun season. And I for one have high hopes for these guys...
