Featherweight- Fifth Round
Alexis Arguello 78-5 (69) vs Juan Manuel Marquez 59-3-1 (43)
They started off slow in the first eight and a half minutes on even terms before Marquez countered a right hand with a thudding hook that floored Alexis for a five count at the end of round three. That set off the action and they traded heavily over the next three rounds with sizzling counter combinations from Marquez getting the better of the heated action.
JMM continued to box brilliantly in the seventh and he stung Alexis with a short uppercut that also brought swelling to his left eye. Arguello landed his biggest punch to date in the eighth when he slammed two hooks to the body and snapped Juan's head straight back with an uppercut, Marquez fired back but it was a big Arguello round as he continually pushed the Mexican back with powerful lefts and rights.
Alexis kept pushing forward down the stretch and he hurt Marquez again in round nine with a short hook along the ropes before they closed the round trading bomb after bomb as the crowd roared. The final three rounds surprisingly slowed as Arguello worked his jab and probed for a big shot while Marquez countered with right hands. The late rally from Alexis fell short and Marquez advanced via SD 115-112 x2 & 113-115
Chalky Wright 19-4 (7) vs Wilfredo Gomez 77-12-1 (60)
Wright used his jab to control the opening round but thirty seconds into round two Wilfredo connected with a short hook that dropped Chalky for a six count and Gomez tore into and landed blow after blow until a punishing four punch combo put Wright down again for the count and gave Gomez an incredibly impressive victory.
Ted Lewis 77-21-6 (22) vs (WBO) Robert Guerrero 53-9-1 (30)
This was an ugly, grinding, inside battle with neither man scoring very cleanly as they grappled for positioning. Lead right hands from Lewis had him looking in the lead until the final three rounds when Robert scored with enough uppercuts in the clinch to retain his title with an upset UD. 116-113, 116-114 & 115-114
Yuriorkis Gamboa 35-8 (22) vs Tommy Collins 19-4 (13)
Gamboa was landing punishing combinations for much of round one when Tommy unloaded a wild overhand right that sent Yuri crashing to the canvas for a seven count and Collins landed two more powerful right hands to close the round and another one that opened a cut on the Cubans left eyelid to open round two. Alas, Gamboa went to work and was pummeling Collins along the ropes in round five when the ref stepped in and ended this Cinderella story.
