Boston 1, Detroit 0. [Boxscore]

Summary: Sox chill Cats bats.

Pitching: Verlander tossed another gem, limiting the Sox to 4 hits and a walk. Along with his 10 strikeouts, he gave a solo HR that proved to be the game's only run scored, and thus took the loss.

His record is now 1-1, 0.39 ERA, 0.57 WHIP, with 31 K's in 23 innings spread over 3 games this post-season.

Veras came on in the 9th in a righty-righty match-up, and he got the job done, striking out Pedroia.

In 4 appearances this post-season, he has a record of 0-0, 1 Hold, 3.00 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, with 6 strikeouts in 3 IP.

Up came Ortiz, and to counter him, Coke was inserted into the game. Both pitches to Ortiz were strikes, and a ground-out to second ensured.

Coke's record this post-season is zeros all across the board with the exception of 0.1 innings pitched, since this was his first appearance.

Alburquerque was summoned to put away Napoli, and he got the job done, inducing a ground-ball to Peralta.

In 4 appearances, Alburquerque sports a record of 0-1, 2 Holds, 7.71 ERA, 1.71 WHIP, with 5 strikeouts in 2.1 innings.

Offense: As good as JV was, Boston was just a little bit better, keeping the erratic Tigers bats in the freezer. Collectively, the Cats garnered 6 hits and 2 walks, and of course, stranded 7 on 0-7 hitting with RISP.

The sad list:

Jackson, 0-3 (.091) with a walk (2) in the 8th inning. He also had 2 whiffs to bring his 8-game post-season total to 18.

Hunter, 2-4 (.182), two singles (1st and 8th innings).

Fielder, 1-4 (.276), a single in the 1st inning.

Martinez, 2-4 (.419), two singles (7th and 9th innings).

Peralta, 1-4 (.417) with a double (4) in the 5th inning.

Avila, 0-3 (.200) with a walk (6) in the 7th inning.

Defense: Errors, 1: Hunter (1), bobble in the 8th inning.

Next game: Wednesday, Boston @ Detroit, 8:08 Eastern.

National TV: Fox. National Radio: ESPNRadio.

Boston local radio: WEEI 93.7, WUFC 1510 (Spanish).
Detroit local radio: 97.1 The Ticket.

Probable starters: Peavy (0-0, 1.59 ERA) vs. Fister (0-0, 4.50 ERA).

Peavy is 1-0, 5.14 ERA in 1 start versus Detroit this season.
Fister is 1-1, 5.23 ERA in 2 starts versus Boston this season.

Notes: Martinez was removed from the game with what appears to be a leg cramp.

Miggy's record of reaching base safely in 31 straight post-season games came to an end.
