2032 opening day roster
ROTATION
1) Cody Miller RHP (32) The one true veteran on the staff. 13-8 3.28 in 32 starts last year. Looking to him again for some consistency.
2) T.J. Miller RHO (28) Signed in late January along with Carlos Hernandez. 63-69 4.79 lifetime in 162 IBL starts. Takes the ball every 5th day. A career best '31 season at 14-11 4.42 for the Bulldogs.
3) Aaron Jones RHP (28) Signed at the beginning of camp, a former 1st rounder (2022). 52-65 4.65 lifetime in 144 starts. Signed to a 3 year 2.1M dollar deal.
4) Randy Kirk LHP (24) The first of my draft choices to get here. 2nd overall pick in 2028 out of UCLA and a top prospect coming in. Will get his chance to work it all out at this level this year.
5) Ruben Trujillo RHP (27) Acquired from the Yankees last winter for Paul Williams. 4-1 4.06 in 38 relief appearances in Staten Island. Signed in 2021 out of Mexico. Along with Miller and Jones, a guy I need to just give innings and help bide time for the younger arms to mature.
BULLPEN
Hidalgo (RHP 30) will close again. Going with 6 total relievers as long as possible.
Tewodros Kijani LHP (27) 4-1 4 SV 3.06 last year in 94 innings. 83 K's 85 H
Milovan Opacic RHP (22) 1-0 1 SV 3.38 in just 5 games after being acuired from El Paso. Spent most of the 2nd half in Wilmington. Possible closer candidate.
Allen Hawking RHP (26) Spent most of last year in New Orleans AAA and in Wilmington. Triple digit arm with outstanding split.
Miguel Valdez LHP (27) 6-4 1 SV 2.08 in 48 games, 60.2 IP. 72 K's and just 42 hits.
Ron Brooks RHP (25) 5-4 14 SV 3.12 in 57 AAA games at Alaska's affiliate in Eagan. Rule 5 pick who must remain on the roster. Huge arm, works ++ fastball with a ++ change up.
CATCHING
Jose Perez (LH 28) .278-24-65 will again take most of the games vs RHP, with Ralph Irwin (Switch 31) .228/.268/.317 as the backup. I am looking to remedy this quickly, Irwin has wanted out since mid last year. First real chance I get to make it happen, it will.
INFIELD
Whereas in former situations I built my offense starting from the outfield working in, this is the extreme other end. My core infield looks like this:
1B) Derek Craig RHH (25) .233/.342/.414 27 HR 81 RBI's in 161 games. The average is lacking, but that's of zero concern. Went into last season as the games #2 offensive prospect and from everything we've seen nothings changed. He's ready to make a statement this year, a true 5 star prospect who is now, per our scouts, at 4.5 of those 5 stars. Drafted 13th overall out of UC-Riverside in 2027
2B) Sancho Ramirez RHH (24) .221/.296/.353 in 82 games last year. Probably the 'weak link' in this young group but still a 3.5 star guy. Right now we feel is at about 2.5 stars. Plays an outstanding 2B, very good 3B and SS. Tick above average speed but his supreme tool is his eye, plate discipline. A .400+ OBP guy. He will strike out his share, but also draw walks. Still has room to grow, looks to be a 15-20 HR ceiling, but will hit 2nd or at the bottom and handle himself. The 8th overall pick in the 2030 draft out of Wichita State by Boston, was acquired for 4 players and a pick in May of last year. Entered last season as the leagues 11th best prospect.
3B) Jonas Heeren LHH (23) A career .323/.361/.463 hitter in 304 games with 41 HR's and 149 RBI's. Prime time bat from the left side. Now capable enough to move away from any sort of platoon. Potential batting title in his near future, hit .350/.378/.508 in a stellar sophomore campaign. Issue is defense. An ok defender, made too many errors last year, 16, but improved his zone rating from -0.3 to +5.4 and his EFF from .998 to 1.021. 32nd overall pick in 2026 out of Sulphur Springs HS right here in Sulphur Springs Texas. Led the Coastal League, at 22, in total hits last season with 202.
SS) Dave Peterson Switch (23) A 5'11” sparkplug. A supreme defender at 2B, SS and elite at 3B as well. Hit a combined .267/.304/.412 in 94 games last year between here and Dayton. Still maturing, and our guys say 4.5 to 5 star ceiling. Dominant from the left side, his defense will keep him in vs LHP depending on how we handle roster spots and our utility roles. His versatility is huge. 35+ doubles 30 HR bat with 3 or 4 hole capability. Sent 5 players and a pick to Dayton in the 8 player deal. Entered last year as the leagues #33 prospect.
1B Bryant Mathews (RH 27) and Utility man Ron Wilton (RH 31) are the backups. You might remember Wilton as an INF prospect I acquired while in Chicago. After looking at the roster I needed a good bat that had versatility around the infield, and he was on the market. Signed to a 3 year 2.29M dollar deal in early March. Mathews had an outstanding year as the defensive guy and as a bat off the bench, hitting .311/.383/.524 in 46 games and 103 AB's with 6 HR's and 18 RBI's.
OUTFIELD
Jeffrey Bullock LHH (25) Got some MVP votes in a record breaking year. Hit .302/.350/.614 with a club record 53 home runs. Has seen his HR totals go up 3 straight years, 35, 36 to 53 last year. Has played in 458 of 486 possible games with 332 RBI's and 124 HR's. While I don't expect a repeat on the average side of things, his 20 power is legit. Main issue is the need to replace his defense in tight games, losing his bat. 28th overall pick out of New York Tech in 2027. Below average defender at both corner spots.
Jarne Weijers LHH (26) Hit a combined .298/.350/.495 in 148 games between New Orleans and here. Sent 3 players and a pick to the Voodoo to grab him. First real meaningful player I dealt for, and a guy I expect to be here in a year or two when this team starts to contend. Was a gold glove winner in RF in 2029, and made his 1st all star team last year. A minor league FA signed out of the Netherlands in 2023 by New Orleans. Supreme corner outfielder who's going to see some CF until we can lock in a permanent option. Outstanding runner (stole 39 last year) with big power, 32 HR's.
Quincy Hutchison Switch (25) Felt like we stole him from San Jose in the January deal. The Wizards took him 15th overall in 2029 out of Missouri State, he didn't sign and then was taken 18th overall by Providence the following year, entered 2031 as the leagues 36th prospect. Dealt to San Jose at the deadline last year. Switch hitter who's preferred side is left, but handles the bat more than ok from the right side to be able to play every day. Very good left fielder, above average CF and can play RF. Top of the order bat, being able to hit anywhere from leadoff to cleanup, with 30+ HR pop.
Ricardoi Mena (RHH 25) and Jose Cruz (LHH 26) are the other 2 outfielders and Lowell Cook (RHH 26) will DH. Right now Cruz is slotted to play RF vs RHP, with Bullock DH'ing and Weijers in left. I am unsure of how Cook is going to take this, but we'll see.
Vs RHP it looks like this:
CF (S) Hutchison
LF (L) Weijers
3B (L) Heeren
DH (L) Bullock
1B (R) Craig
RF (L) Cruz
SS (S) Peterson
C (L) Perez
2B (R) Ramirez
Vs LHP
LF (R) Mena
SS (R) Wilton
1B (R) Craig
RF (L) Bullock
DH (R) Cook
C (S) Irwin
2B (R) Ramirez
CF (S) Hutchison
3B (L) Heeren
