Computer Manager - Playoff Smarts
Been watching the computer manager prepare for the playoffs, and some lessons need to be learned
1) prep your pitching rotation for the playoffs when you have the division sewn up - i.e. don't let your #1 starter pitch the final regular season game when it is meaningless
2) rotation mismanagement - because of 1 above, the #2 starter opened game 1, then the #1 starter was ready for game 2 which he pitched. So who comes up in turn for game 3? of course, the #2 again on 2 days rest!
3) roster management at year-end. minor league call ups are great, but some new big leaguer with a few games under his belt does not belong on a playoff roster. a case to make this point:
CPU considered the following guys to fill an empty slot in the playoff rotation:
a) Robertson, SP, age 32, 7 yrs ML exp, season line in Majors: 9-2, 3.43 ERA, 107.2 IP
b) Catalano, age 25, 2 games ML exp, season (and career) line in Majors: 0-0, 6.92 ERA, 13 IP
Guess who made the playoff roster, and in the #3 rotation spot. This just isn't realistic IMO
4) use of the DL - computer was at a serious disadvantage since they left their #1 starter on the DL (0 days DL time remaining, but 6 days injury time) at the end of the season. Now he's lost for the entire playoffs. This is not the first time I've observed this poor decision.
