I believe you are correct in relation to the rule.
To my understanding, if a player is injured in the middle of a series he can be replaced on the roster. The injured player would not be eligible to play in the next series.
Unfortunately I am not savvy enough to know whether there is a way around this. The list of players eligible to be picked from as an injury replacement is quite confusing to me. I believe this is a change from the old collective bargaining agreement. So if we are playing on the old agreement no changes would be allowed as per the way the game is handling it. It may be frustrating but it is much simpler!
