I am and always have been loyal to the Mets, Knicks, Giants, Rangers no matter how awful they've been. But in sports that I don't have roots dating to adolescence, I've tended to pick up teams that were good when I first started following the sport.
Soccer f.e., I'm not exactly a bandwagon fan since I picked up Manchester United when I first discovered soccer since they were nearly the only team I could get regular info on in the infancy of the internet. Yes they were good than and have stayed good.
Or Duke in college basketball. They hadn't won a national title yet when my ten year old self picked them as my favorite team. But they'd been to several final fours and won a title the next year.
But in both the cases of Man U and Duke, I've stayed with those teams even in somewhat down periods.
Does the way I chose Manchester United or Duke somehow make me less of a fan or those teams than of the NY teams I loved from infancy?
No, of course not. Nor does it do so for other fans who've switched allegiances or picked as their first team a team that have happened to be good at that time. That's a silly line of reasoning.
