Offseason wrap up
March 1st, 2019
It ended up being a fairly uneventful free agency period for the Rockies as they failed to sign any free agents. They did however go after 1 big name in free agent pitcher Shelby Miller. While the Rockies did participate in a bidding war for Miller they were unwilling to pay him the $26,000,000 per year that he ended up getting. They truly could have afforded him this year but it could have hindered their ability to keep some of the other young players who are up for arbitration soon or have contracts coming to a close next season.
The Rockies also made a somewhat unpopular trade but with some very good starting pitching prospects ready to hit the big leagues it seemed like a good move. The team traded SP Hirokazu Araki to the division rival San Francisco Giants for a number of prospects, maybe not top of the prospect list but they needed to bolster their farms. Araki is 31 years old and in 2 season with Colorado went 25-17 with a 4.70 ERA. Araki was due $12,500,000 this season with a $13,500,000 team option next season and the Rockies paid $3,000,000 of his contract this season as part of the trade. In return the Rockies got 4 players:
- 26 year old minor league RF Charlie Green who hit .261/.371/.560 18 HR and 57 RBI in AA last season.
- 22 year old minor league SP Claudo Martinez is the #97 prospect last season an was selected to the Eastern League All Star Game. Last year in AA he was 14-11 with a 4.08 ERA
- 25 year old RP Felix Encarnacion pitched 35.2 innings for the Giants last season with a 3.53 ERA
- 25 year old minor league RP Jack Jackson pitched 31 innings in AA last season with a 3.48 ERA
The Rockies yesterday also completed a trade for one of the top prospects. They know SS Troy Tulowitzki is beginning to get older and they don't really have any highly touted prospects at SS so they went after one. The Rockies traded with the Houston Astros for 22 year old SS Steve Wallace who was the 7 overall prospect last season. He is an average contact hitter but has a lot of patience and good power. He also is known to be a quick and very solid defender. To get Wallace the Rockies gave up:
- 24 year old minor league RP Hugh Stephens. Stephens was a 7th round pick in 2013 but has had struggles since going to AAA with an ERA over 7
- 28 year old minor league SP Daniel Corcino. Corcino has pitched for the Rockies in spot starts for injured starters but never seen much success.
- 24 year old LF Jose Gonzalez was the centerpiece of this trade, the #33 overall prospect is coming along slowly in the minors but looks to be a star someday but the Rockies have a very full outfield already.
- 27 year old former star RF Jorge Soler was traded. Glenn Mackie took over his position last year on the way to the ROY award while Soler hit just .185 in 250 at bats. He truly only had one good season for the Rockies
- A toss in for the trade was 24 year old SP Ian Clarkin who was 2-4 in 13 games last year for AAA Colorado Springs with a 5.82 ERA.
As we head towards spring training with the trade of Araki and letting Kevin Gausman go in free agency keep an eye on 2 rookie call ups. The Rockies brought up Evan Anderson and Travis O'Bryan. Anderson was the #34 overall prospect last season while O'Bryan was the #13 and had the no hitter last August.
