Veit upsets Calzaghe!
Former WBO super-middleweight champion #10 Joe Calzaghe 29-1-0 (11) suffered a convincing unanimous decision loss against #36 Mario Veit 29-2-1 (15).
For the first four rounds the fighters alternated on the control round by round, Calzaghe won the first and fourth rounds and Veit the second and the third ones.
But then Veit took a decesive lead on the scorecards winning rounds from five to seven. Specially the seventh round was big for the German that hurt Calzaghe with a strong combination and followed up with an uppercut and a straight right to the head.
Calzaghe reacted winning the eighth round with the highlight of a hard straight right and a well timed uppercut to Veit’s chin.
Veit regained the control on the ninth stanza in which Calzaghe failed to land any remarkable punches. The last round of the bout was fought on even terms until Calzaghe edged it with a hard uppercut seconds before the end of the fight. The scorecards were 97-93 and 96-94 (x2) for Veit. On the co-feature fight Brazilian #42 Mauricio Amaral 24-6-2 (20) defeated Canadian #52 Michael Olajide 27-4-0 (19) by TKO3-on cuts-.
Amaral won the first round of the fight against a passive Olajide. On the second round the two fighters traded boms with Amaral a bit better. One of this bombs, a tremendous left, opened a gash above Olajide’s right eyebrow.
On the third round again the fighters went to the punch per punch and with a hard right cross Olajide cut Amaral above his right eyebrow, but Amaral answered the fire and with a quick uppercut reopened Olajide’s cut. Olajide’s cut seemed to be worse than Amaral’s one and the referee stopped the actions determinning that Amaral was the winner by TKO3.
